That's a good question. Of class, I love those kinds of achievements. But my normal life is very plain. In fact I literally live in a boondocks chosen Plainville (Massachusetts). It's a really elementary identify; the population is virtually viii,000. Most of my life is going to my kids basketball games, driving them around, working on homework with them. And then I own a bookstore. And so that'south my normal life.

The fact that I'm talking to you in the Philippines, is equally strange for me as probably for you to be in Dallas, Texas, talking to somebody. It's just a strange life in a foreign world. But it's very wonderful.

When y'all first sit down downward to write a new book, how does that get? Can you take me through the procedure?

Yeah. Information technology starts for me in January basically when I get off tour. And I get-go actually thinking well-nigh jokes. I know from experience that I need most 350 jokes to brand a good book. Sometimes I come up up short. Only 350 jokes volition give me a good book. Wow. How long were you gone?

I was gone for nigh 5 days.

And then you just phone call your wife and say, 'Hey I'one thousand going to Iceland.'

Yeah, pretty much! (laughs). This year I feel similar my brain is like an oppositionally defiant teenager in a style in that it knows I need jokes just it won't give them to me? Then it'southward just a real struggle.

That part of the writing takes a long fourth dimension, about four or five months. So afterward I write my jokes, and so I sit to write my manuscript. And normally at that point I don't even know what the plot is going to be. And so I don't fifty-fifty know what the theme is. And then information technology'due south e'er a highwire act. I write the manuscript for a month, and so I do all my illustrations from well-nigh a month to a month and a half. And I draw for almost xiii hours a solar day. Sometimes 17 hours a solar day. Aye. Actually it was very exciting for me a few years ago when I started getting invitations to come to the Philippines. That was just really wild for me, to call back that the books were reaching that far. And then this is actually a culmination of a long-gestating dream. When I was growing upwards in the Washington DC surface area, maybe somewhere between 10 to xv percent of the kids in my class were Filipino, so it'south just actually interesting to come to the place where it all started. So this visit really has a special meaning for me.

Have you thought about what kind of gift you want to get for Christmas this year?

I remember if I had to practise my books all over again, I would've made them a lilliputian less American.
